In contrast to older models, the majority of modern Saab cars have a transponder on the key-fob, instead of a physical metal key to unlock and start the car. The good thing is that the battery can be replaced quite easily by an experienced locksmith. If you have the right tools and patience you can do it yourself. If your SAAB 9-3 key fob begins having trouble turning the barrel of the lock it could be time to replace it. The procedure is quite simple and you don't need to visit a dealership. You can complete the process at home, using a couple of simple tools.

First, you'll need prepare the new key. Before you begin, ensure that the anti-theft device is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels and releasing the handbrake. Insert the key in the ignition, and then turn it to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories, but will not start the engine. Repeat this five times, then keep the key in the on position.

Next, you'll need to find a new case for your old key fob. These are available at most auto parts stores and are typically quite affordable. Based on the model, you may even purchase them without electronics.

To open the case, place a flathead screwdriver in the slot that is in the middle and gently work it. The case will break easily and, once you've done that, you'll have access to the internal electronics. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pull out the electronic components.
